The Bible is full of stories of ancient prophets, famous leaders and inspiring kings. Stories of courage and loss, conviction and faith, hope and betrayal. Fantastic-sounding stories about men named Adam, Noah, Moses, David, Solomon, Judah... Men who form the backbone (the forefathers) of the Jewish people and have inspired millions with their words, their wisdom or their inspiring deeds.
As an amateur scholar of the possible origins of Bible stories and their meanings, I'd like to place the Biblical characters in their rightful historical context. I want to know what the world was like around them and if other books than the Bible wrote about them or mentioned them. To that effect, an article by Laurence Mykytiuk in the March/April 2014 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review was an amazing read. A quote from the author:
"At least 50 people mentioned in the Bible have been identified in the archaeological record. Their names appear in inscriptions written during the period described by the Bible and in most instances during or quite close to the lifetime of the person identified.”
