With Hollywood's new movie Noah causing a flood of reactions both positive and less so, I decided to investigate the new movie and the flood story for myself.
I've not yet seen the movie, however this Time Magazine article by Ken Ham has definitely made me curious! The movie is indeed about a man named Noah who builds a huge ark, however that's about as far as the story sticks to the Biblical account, apparently.
Now the movie may not be faithful to the Biblical account about Noah, but is it faithful to any other accounts?
The story about a man who builds a huge ark to guard against a coming flood isn't exclusive to the Bible at all, it is actually an oft-repeated story. Check out this great article from How Stuff Works that offers an intro about flood stories and tells you exactly how prevalent they are!

One of the more well known stories outside of the Bible is that of Gilgamesh and Utnapishtim. For a comparison of the Gilgamesh story and the Biblical account from a Christian perspective, check out this icr.org article. Their side by side comparison chart helped me see how similar the two accounts are.
Then there this post at CNN's Religion Blogs section that Google found for me. It tells about a cuneiform tablet that has been found in what's now Iraq describing the story of a flood and a man who saved animals from the flood two by two, just as in the story of Noah.
Surprising about this find - it's the oldest written account dating to about 4,000 years BCE. While there are many similarities to the Biblical account, there are also some differences. Read this isciencetimes article for more information and some great new insights!
I hope that one day we'll learn the real story about Noah, or whatever his name may have been!
